Tips on Using Essential Oils Safely

Essential oils are liquids derived from the stems, leaves, bark, roots or flowers of plants. They are very concentrated. Even small amounts can cause harm if used improperly. Here are tips on how to use these products safely.

Using directly on skin

Undiluted oils should never be used directly on the skin. Always dilute them with a base oil or emulsifier such as Apricot Kernel, Jojoba or Almond oil. Never touch the eyes or mucous membranes such as the nose. Oils such as Lavender and Tea tree are generally accepted to be safe to use topically, however caution should always be exercised when using any essential oil.

When using for the first time, do a skin patch test.

For pure essential oils, add one drop in 2.5 mL (or 1/2 teaspoon) of vegetable oil and apply it to your arm. If the area turns red, or if there is burning or itchiness, wash the area and do not use that product.

Do not ingest.

They are highly concentrated and have the capacity to cause serious damage if used internally without the necessary expertise required in administering it. This is supported by the International Federation of Aromatherapists that does not recommend ingestion of essential oils unless under the supervision of a Medical Doctor who is also qualified in clinical aromatherapy.

When Should You Use 3rd Party Medical Insurance Claims Requests In Your Practice?

When one thinks of healthcare in the U.S. today, there are three key components to consider. They are the patient, the provider, and the one who pays the bill. It is no secret that the health insurance industry, both government and private insurance carriers, pays for most of the health care for U.S. citizens. About 70% of all the payments to hospitals, doctors, labs, diagnostic centers, rehab facilities, and other certified providers are made by insurance payers. The patients pay the other 30% or so out of their own pockets. What happens when your medical insurance claims are not paid timely?

Medicare and Medicaid are taxpayer-funded and are highly regulated, as are the private payers. However, almost all private health care insurance companies are "for profit." This means that they must take in more than they pay out in insurance claims to providers, and the amount of positive cash flow must be enough to pay all overhead costs, employee salaries, variable expenses, and stockholders, plus a required amount of cash in reserve as required by various federal and state laws. Even Medicare and Medicaid are required to simulate that model, or at least not lose money, which means all payers (both government and private) have strict rules regarding reimbursements, or payouts for legitimate claims. To patients and providers, these regulations may often appear arbitrary and unfair, which is why there are state and federal agencies to monitor and police the insurance industry.

But who acts on behalf of the medical providers? The legislation of the past five years, including the HITECH Act and the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare) has added to the financial burden. The providers, as the recipients of the payment for healthcare services, are feeling the crunch of lower reimbursement from payers, and higher accounts receivable from patient balances.

The Affordable Care Act Effect: How the Affordable Care Act Affects Medical Practices

The practice of medicine is highly revered in the U.S., and yet no other industry or career path has as much regulation or such widespread and public potential of litigation for malpractice. The days of the venerable country doctor are over, yet the public still holds that perception, while the reality is more controlled by Federal agencies, insurance companies, Congress, drug companies, attorneys, and technology.

Today, more than 65% of the new physicians bypass private practice when they begin their practice of medicine. Largely due to the costs of starting a practice (much of which is due to the heavy regulation and litigation potential) these new doctors would rather be employees of hospitals and have someone else take all or most of the risk. Just a few of the laws that have contributed to this transition are The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) passed in 1996; the Balanced Budget Act of 1997; the HITECH Act 2009, and of course the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), commonly called Obamacare.

Besides the movement away from entrepreneurship, this transition can have an impact of the quality of care if only from the standpoint of the potential for changing the highly regarded "physician-patient interaction" standard the public has long treasured. There is another trend that is just emerging. More of the existing doctors are choosing to become hospital employees rather than struggle with the unprecedented challenges which medical practices face in accounts receivables management and cash flow. Again, these challenges are the result of the regulations of Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, and the many acts mentioned earlier.

The latest act, Obamacare, is still unfolding. Only a small portion of its regulatory structure has been implemented. The act was intended to help citizens pay for healthcare by forcing regulations onto insurance companies and private citizens, but the impact of this, as well as the other acts, always falls on the medical provider, usually in the form of reduced reimbursement. Obamacare promises to impact the financing model of healthcare in ways still unknown, but potentially feared by most physicians. However the known provisions of the legislation are already having an effect. The continued pressure to reduce Medicare reimbursements are a known part of the act. Lesser known provisions, such as the pressure to move the healthcare financing model to ACOs (Accountable Care Organizations), and the incentives to force medical providers to purchase and use EMRs (electronic medical records) systems, have caused nothing less than frenzy in the private medical community.

Conquering Combat Stress

As a Psychologist working on a military base, there wasn't a day that went by that I didn't hear, 'Ma'am, there is really something wrong with me. I think I am going crazy.' Since returning from deployment over eight months ago, this marine hasn't been able to sleep or concentrate.

As the month's passed, his anxiety started to increase until it hit a crescendo - a panic attack. He fears that any minute, another panic attack will happen. On top of all of this, he feels that he has failed terribly.

I thought I was strong but now, I have lost my confidence. Ever since I have returned, I am just not the same person. He was planning on staying in the military until retirement. Now he fears that he will not be able to make it to the end of the year.

Combat/operational stress is expected and inevitable. Our brains are biologically programmed to react instantaneously when we are threatened with danger. The Fight or Flight response readies the body for intense muscular effort, supported by all of the body's systems. Although this response is not as essential as it once was, it certainly comes in handy during periods of vulnerability and crisis.

The very nature of war dictates that we are ready and on alert at all times. The Fight or Flight response provides what is necessary to function successfully in this environment. Since deployments last for long periods of time, our brains stay on overdrive to protect us from impending danger and threat. The success of our military is in part due to this hardwiring of our brain and its ability to adapt to very stressful circumstances.

How To Get 8 Hours Of Sleep Without Drugs

Getting 8 hours of restful sleep can be quite difficult for some people.

Early on in my career, I remember meeting a patient who came to my clinic with a variety of health concerns: digestive troubles, migraines, pain and other inflammatory symptoms.

Having recently moved to Winnipeg for work, she could not figure out what had gone wrong since, according to her, she was doing everything right when it came to her health.

Her nutritional profile looked good - a strict, no refined sugar, no refined carbohydrates, no toxin diet. She exercised daily (sometimes twice a day) and would proudly state how important it was for her to take care of her body with regular chiropractic care.

Stumped, I was preparing myself for a "tough case." As we began our case history, the topic of sleep came up. Me: "How many hours of sleep do you get a night?" Her: "Sleep? Who has time for that?"

Relating Health to Physical Education

There seems to be a problem in education, especially in health education that what students learn in class is only learned in the class and then forgotten. Educators need to be able to teach the students what they need to know, and not let them forget about it. One solution to this problem is to relate what you learn in health class to what you are learning in physical education. What happens if you teach a topic in health, but the students don't learn it in physical education? Teach a topic in health, and then find space in your school to do what you just learned. Great examples of things you learn in class are fitness concepts and sport related fitness concepts. Some examples of fitness and sport related fitness concepts are muscular strength, flexibility, agility, and balance. There are several others but those are just a couple of examples.

To get the student to learn these concepts you can teach them in a normal health class, but spice it up. Don't be up there lecturing them the whole time. Have a variety of strategies. To use a golf analogy, the rules of golf say that a player can carry up to 14 clubs in his or her bag. How many teachers did you know who only had a driver in their "Golf Bag of Pedagogy?" The lesson could start with a PowerPoint, and then discuss what the PowerPoint is talking about. Whatever you do, get the students involved. Meaning in this case, UP STAND OUT OF THEIR SEATS! Once you have done a non-boring lesson on fitness concepts, then go out and do it. Get in the gym and attempt to make it fun as opposed to work. After all, we want people to want to return to the gym, not avoid it!! One day you teach muscular strength, and in your lesson you explain that muscular strength is the amount of force one can produce in between 1 and 15 repetitions. Great, now is that student going to remember it? Maybe if it is going to be on a test in which they will study it at the last minute and remember it just for the test and then forget about it. After you teach your muscular strength lesson find some room in the gym, or wherever, to do activities that involve muscular strength.
